Diamond Buying Guide

Understanding the 5 C's

Cut, Color, Clarity, Carat, and Cost. Five simple ideas that help you choose a diamond that's beautiful, certified, and entirely your own — grown or natural — without the guesswork.

Choosing a diamond should feel like the beginning of a story, not a chemistry exam.

Every Amorati diamond — grown or natural — is independently graded and chosen to mark a moment that matters. This guide walks you through the five things worth understanding before you buy: what each one means, why it matters, and where the smart value lives. Amorati specializes in grown diamonds for their exceptional value and traceable, conflict-free origin, and we also offer natural mined diamonds. Prefer a mined stone? Any Amorati design can be customized with a natural diamond — simply speak with our concierge. Whichever you choose, every center stone is independently certified by a laboratory such as the IGI or GIA.

Cut

Where light finds form

Cut isn't the shape of a diamond — it's the precision of its angles, proportions, and finish. It's what takes light, bends it, and sends it back as brilliance. A masterfully cut stone looks alive; a poorly cut one can look dull even at a high grade.

Why it matters: Cut is the first thing the eye notices — across a room, in a photograph, in motion. It has the greatest visual impact of any of the five C's, which is why we treat it as non-negotiable on every diamond we set.

What to look for: Whether your stone is grown or natural, it's graded for cut on the same scale. Look for Excellent or Ideal cut grades to capture the most fire and sparkle.

Color

A spectrum of brilliance

Most diamonds carry a subtle tone, graded from D (completely colorless) to Z (noticeably warm). The less color a white diamond shows, the rarer it is — and typically the more valuable.

Why it matters: D–F stones are considered "colorless," while G–J are "near-colorless" and often look identical to the naked eye — frequently the smartest value in the range.

What to look for: Grown diamonds often rank higher in color thanks to their controlled formation, so you'll regularly find D–F stones at accessible prices. For natural diamonds, our concierge can source a colorless or near-colorless stone to your preference.

Want color on purpose? Fancy hues like pink, blue, and yellow are extraordinarily rare in nature but more attainable when grown — so you can choose a stone that stands out for its color, by design.

3C

Clarity

Flawless isn't the point

Clarity describes the tiny internal or surface characteristics — called inclusions — that form as a diamond develops. Most are microscopic and invisible without magnification, but they're part of what the grading laboratory measures.

Why it matters: Beyond a certain point, clarity is about the certificate more than what your eye can actually see. An "eye-clean" diamond looks flawless in everyday wear without paying for perfection you can't perceive.

What to look for: VS1–SI1 offers excellent value and visual clarity; VVS2 and above suits perfectionists or heirloom-level pieces. Every Amorati center stone — grown or natural — starts at a VS1 minimum.

Carat

Weight that holds meaning

Carat measures weight, not size. A beautifully proportioned 1.5ct can appear larger than a shallow 2ct — what reads on the hand is presence, not just the number on the certificate.

Why it matters: Carat often carries the most emotional weight. Whether you go bold or minimal, it should feel aligned with your intention, your style, and your story.

What to look for: Grown diamonds let you go bigger for the same budget — a 2ct grown diamond often costs what a 1ct natural diamond does. If the rarity of a larger natural stone is what you're after, our concierge can source it.

5C

Cost

Your diamond, your choice

Grown diamonds typically cost 30–60% less than comparable natural diamonds — so you can choose more carat, clarity, and character for your budget. Natural diamonds carry a premium for their rarity and billion-year origin. Both are real, certified, and beautiful; the right choice is simply the one that fits your story and budget.

Why the price difference? Natural diamonds require excavation, transportation, and a long supply chain. Grown diamonds are created in advanced facilities using intense heat and pressure, which streamlines the process — without changing what the diamond is.

Do diamonds hold value? Both grown and natural diamonds can be appraised, insured, and passed down. Think of either as a modern heirloom: intentional, beautiful, and chosen to be worn. Talk to our concierge to compare options for your piece.

Why it matters

The Amorati Standard

The 5 C's define a range. Most brands choose somewhere in the middle and charge extra for anything better. We don't — because here, premium isn't an upgrade. It's the starting line, on grown and natural diamonds alike.

VS1 Minimum

Every Amorati center stone starts at VS1 clarity or better — eye-clean, brilliant, and held to a higher floor than the industry norm.

Independently Certified

Each diamond, grown or natural, is graded by an independent laboratory such as the IGI or GIA — so quality is verified by someone other than the people selling it.

Ethically Sourced

Our grown diamonds are created above ground, traceable and conflict-free; our natural diamonds are responsibly sourced. Both are set in thoughtfully chosen metals.

Common Questions

Diamond Buying FAQ

What are the 5 C's of a diamond?
The 5 C's are Cut, Color, Clarity, Carat, and Cost. Cut determines how brilliantly a diamond reflects light, color measures how colorless it is (D–Z), clarity grades its tiny internal characteristics, carat is its weight, and cost reflects how these factors combine. Understanding all five helps you balance beauty and value.
Which of the 5 C's is most important?
Cut has the biggest impact on a diamond's beauty, because it controls how the stone returns light. A well-cut diamond can look more brilliant than a larger or higher-graded stone with a mediocre cut. For most buyers, prioritizing cut and choosing an eye-clean clarity (such as VS1–SI1) and a near-colorless grade delivers the best balance of beauty and value.
Does Amorati sell mined (natural) diamonds too?
Yes. Amorati specializes in grown diamonds for their value and traceable, conflict-free origin, and we also offer natural mined diamonds. Any Amorati design can be customized with a natural diamond — simply speak with our concierge, who will source and set a certified natural stone to your specifications.
Are grown diamonds real diamonds?
Yes. Grown (lab-grown) diamonds are chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural mined diamonds — they are pure crystallized carbon with the same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale) and the same brilliance. The only difference is origin: they are grown above ground rather than formed in the earth.
Do diamonds hold their value?
Both grown and natural diamonds can be appraised, insured, and passed down like any fine jewelry. They're best thought of as modern heirlooms chosen for beauty and meaning. Because grown diamonds cost 30–60% less than comparable natural diamonds, many buyers choose higher clarity, color, or carat for the same budget.
What clarity grade should I choose?
For most people, VS1–SI1 offers excellent value and is "eye-clean," meaning inclusions aren't visible without magnification. VVS2 and above suits perfectionists or heirloom-level pieces. Every Amorati center stone — grown or natural — begins at a VS1 minimum.
What does it mean that a diamond is IGI or GIA certified?
It means the diamond has been graded by an independent gemological laboratory — the International Gemological Institute (IGI) or the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) — rather than by the seller. The certificate documents the diamond's cut, color, clarity, and carat so you can verify exactly what you're buying.
How much should I spend on a diamond?
There's no fixed rule — the right amount is what feels aligned with your intention and budget. Grown diamonds cost significantly less than natural diamonds of the same quality, so many buyers choose a larger or higher-quality stone than expected, while others prefer the rarity of a natural diamond. Our concierge can help you balance the 5 C's to your priorities.
